Nigerian Minister of agriculture and rural development, Dr Akinwumi Adesina has said that the LEADERSHIP Public Officer of the Year 2013 Award given to him by LEADERSHIP Newspapers Group would inspire him and his team in the sector to do more for the country.
According to him, while the award is also a recognition of the
tremendous transformation going on in the agriculture sector which President
Goodluck Jonathan had embarked on in his transformation agenda, the overall
goal was borne out of the urgent need to rapidly diversify the economy.
Adesina said, “I wish to thank the LEADERSHIP Newspapers for
this honour of being awarded the Public Officer of the Year. I am highly
honoured and humbled by the award. There is nothing more important than the
opportunity to serve one’s nation, the place of ones birth. Noting more
fulfilling than working to help create hope and opportunities for others.
“As Mohandas Gandhi said ‘ The best way to find yourself is to
lose yourself in the service of others’. That has always been my life ambition,
passion and drive, and will remain so. This Public Officer of the Year award by
the Leadership Newspapers will inspire me and my team to do more”.
Maintaining that agriculture is the future hope of the country,
the minister said, “Agriculture is where the future of Nigeria lies. Our nation
faces huge challenges with the decline in global demand for crude oil as the
Euro zone weakens, demand from the US reduces sharply as they found shale oil
and gas.
“So, much has been achieved, with the hard efforts of the
president, spurring farmers, governors, commissioners, private sector and banks
in a remarkable drive to unlock the potential of agriculture in our nation”.
Adesina thanked state governors who he said have been remarkably
supportive of the reforms in the sector, even as he applauded farmers’
president, for his remarkable support without which he could not have achieved
so much in a short period of time.
Noting
that all public servants and citizens of the nation should rise up to build the
country, he listed those he dedicated the award to include “All the friends of
Nigeria’s agriculture, the working Nigerian farmers, all my dedicated and hard
working staff in the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and State Ministries of
Agriculture across the nation.
”Others are “All my colleagues in the Federal Executive Council,
private sector agribusinesses, Central Bank of Nigeria and commercial banks.
National Assembly, state and local governments, and the journalists who have
helped to tell our story – this is a collective effort”.
