The objectives of the ATA to drive
perception of agriculture as a business rather than a social project has
started yielding results, as 60 percent of the ₦220 billion Small and Medium
Enterprises Development Fund approved by the Central Bank of Nigeria would
be channeled towards the development of the agriculture sector.
This
was disclosed at a recent press briefing in Abuja by the National President,
All Farmers Association of Nigeria – AFAN, Kabiru Ibrahim.
He
therefore urged farmers across the country to form co-operatives and apply for
the loan in order to increase the country’s agricultural productivity, while
outlining the challenges plaguing the sector to include the use of primitive
tools by most farmers and the low involvement of able-bodied youths in the
sector.
Acknowledging
the efforts of the present administration to revive and re-position the sector,
Ibrahim solicited for further assistance and intervention from the government
to ensure enhanced productivity of Nigerian farmers to facilitate food security
for the nation’s large population.
