The All Farmers Association of Nigeria has
assured President Muhammadu Buhari of its readiness to work with his government
to ensure that Nigerians have food security.
In a statement made available to our correspondent in Abuja on
Tuesday, the association also lauded former President Goodluck Jonathan for
signing the Nigerian Biosafety Bill into law.
It also called on the Ministry of Environment to ensure proper
implementation of the law so that the nation could benefit from the application
of biotechnology in the development of the agricultural sector.
AFAN stated, “We pledge to work with the government in
fulfilling its campaign manifesto, which envisions embracing modern
technological tools to solve farming problems. This, will in effect, ensure
that Nigeria is food secure and globally competitive.
“We wish to extend our sincere congratulations to Dr. Goodluck
Jonathan for signing the Nigerian Biosafety Bill into law. By enacting the
biosafety law, we see an opportunity for us to widen our choices in the range
of agricultural tools provided by biotechnology research. We enthusiastically
look forward to joining our counterparts from Africa, Asia and, indeed, other
countries in the world who have been provided such choices.”
It added, “We are pleased that our country is on course in the
application of biotechnology research, with the potential to substantially
increase yields, create more jobs for our young people and contribute to
environment preservation, thus enabling the Nigerian farmer to efficiently make
contribution to food security.
“It is our hope that we shall now grow various crops of interest
currently undergoing research, including the insect resistant cowpea, the
disease resistant cassava, rice and the nutritionally enhanced sorghum.”
